Grape seed extract is a herbal preparation made from grapes. This extract contains oligomeric proanthocyandin (OPC), an important antioxidant.

Although a relatively new product, OPC’s reduce swelling, improve blood circulation, and protect the body physically - from environmental chemicals and mentally. Researchers suggest OPC ‘s may benefit cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration from diabetes, and cancer having anti-tumor properties. It has been taken to treat varicose veins, premenstrual syndrome, dental plaque, and lymphedema - an accumulation of lymph fluid in soft tissue.

One clinical trial demonstrated that the antioxidant action of Grape Seed Extract is more powerful than the effect of vitamins C, E and beta-carotene. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) have a number of properties.  First, they appear to help Vitamin C work better in the brain. OPCs also act as natural anti-histamines, block inflammation and boost the immune system. They also reportedly affect the metabolic enzymes that regulate neurotransmitters and they appear to inhibit the breakdown of norepinephrine and dopamine.

The primary uses of PCO extracts are in the treatment of venous and capillary disorders including venous insufficiency, varicose veins, capillary fragility, and disorders of the retina including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Good clinical studies have shown positive results in the treatment of these conditions. One study showed that taking 300mg of the extract daily for just 60 days reduced the eye strain related to computer monitor work.
